William loves to work in the Plein Aire tradition, but also enjoys working large, so often a painting begins as a color sketch on site, and then develops in the studio. His oils range from 20”x 24” up to 4’x 8’.
“Working in the Plein Aire tradition, the paintings begin in the woods, in a field perhaps in a canoe. Early light, late light, approaching storms are all opportunities…the raw material of a painting. But the intentions of a painter only start the process. Paintings have a life of their own, with a logic and interdependence of elements akin to those of any natural place. Upset the balance and you lose both.”
William Simpson lives in Granby, Connecticut, with an expansive view of the McLean Game Refuge and miles of unspoiled farmlands and woodlands. |
